Selamat Pagi from Papua, dear (Kudanil) Explorer!

After 5 months in Komodo, Sumba, Rote and Alor, we spent the past weeks in the magnificent Banda Sea exploring the Spice Islands and the Forgotten Islands. We sailed from Saumlaki through the Forgotten Islands to Banda, the epicentre of the Spice Islands (and from there eventually onto Triton Bay in Papua). For centuries, the ‘spiceries’ were the most sought-after islands in the world, capturing the European imagination and inspiring Columbus to undertake his famous journey westward. Watch the video from our last year’s Spice Islands expedition.

Relive the Spice Island voyages of adventurers throughout history and discover the best of Wallacea, a region that is a key contributor to the mega biodiversity of the Indonesian archipelago, a waypoint for migratory birds and marine life. Snorkel in remote waters, see diverse species of birds and set anchor at the legendary Banda Islands, the original source of nutmeg and mace and now home to some of the most resilient coral and breathtaking underwater worlds. Travel back in time among nutmeg and cinnamon plantations and colonial architecture. The best times of the year for these waters are March/April and September/October - have a look at our schedule for availability.

One of the smallest of the Banda Islands, Pulau Rhun, was ‘exchanged’ by the British in the 17th century for another island at the other side of the world, a place known today as Manhattan. During these Spice Island journeys, we will cruise through islands with smoking volcanoes rising from one of the deepest seas in the world – the Banda Sea, 7000 deep meters with its amazing fauna and marine biodiversity. The Maluku region with its capital - Banda Neira - is key to understanding the history of colonialism and navigation. We will hike volcanoes, look for schools of hammerhead sharks and hope to encounter both whales and dolphins (and found them during the past trips). We will visit villages forgotten by civilization, historical forts and colonial relicts that witnessed the spice trade. Contact us for your tailor-made quote and itinerary.
